Look at this picture and figure out, if you can, why these nine men are so happy and contented in appearance, especially when they are just going on shift.
One reason, perhaps, is that they have just heard the hoist figures for Black Diamond and they’re tickled pink over the big lead the mine now holds.
Another reason, and this may account for the well-fed appearance of some of them, is that they have just come from the Black Diamond or McKay hotels where Chef Coolidge or Chef Whelan feed so well.
At any rate, they agree to a man that Black Diamond is the best camp that ever boasted a coal mine.
