The ninth of December, 1899, was just like any other day in Carbonado, Washington. Residents arose to a wet, dreary, typical Pacific Northwest late fall day, but before it was over, the lives of all the town’s residents had changed forever. Many wives were made widows and children became orphans.

The above is an excerpt from the book, Mining Tragedies in Carbon River Coal Country. The book outlines the many coal mine explosions in Carbonado, Wilkeson, and Burnett from 1899 to 1930.

On December 7, 2002, almost 103 years to the day after the area’s first major mine explosion which took 31 lives, members of Wilkeson Eagles Aerie 1409 unveiled a memorial to these lost miners in the Carbonado Cemetery. (more…)
