New Pacific Coast Coal Co logo - 1927Black Diamond mine was idle Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving Day because of a breakdown of the underground electric hoist, which occurred early Friday morning.

The main shaft of the hoist broke in two and it was necessary to install a new one inasmuch as the old one could not be repaired.

Remarkable work was done in getting the engine again in operation in so short a time. The new shaft was ordered in Seattle Friday morning; by that night the forging plant had completed its work and the shaft was turned over to the machine shop for the lathe work.

Sunday morning at 3 o’clock it was turned over to the Transportation Department and reached the mine a few hours afterwards, and on Monday morning the engine was ready for that day’s hoist. (more…)
