Springboard to controversy at present is the above proposal of Water District 108 to expand its service to the east Maple Valley-Hobart area. The 12-inch pipeline shown by the heavy black line would serve the Wilderness Village shopping center and, by crossing Cedar River, accommodate the “Cheryl Lee” housing development of Hal Brandt, a Bellevue real estate man. Water District 108 maintains that it has a perfect right to provide public water for its customers. Opponents say it would lead to overdevelopment in the east Maple Valley area, including sewers. In 1971 Water District 108 sought to extend its franchise area to the entire Valley area. The dispute then reached fever pitch when over 350 property owners met at the Maple Valley Community Club to register their protest in a hearing called by the water district. Apparently the controversy still rages. (Map by Voice artist Carol McCoy.)
