Braving danger of further slides in Pierce County coal mine, crews strive to recover bodies

A rescue group coming up for a short rest period from the Carbonado mine of the Pacific Coast Coal Company, into which a layer of muck and gravel, weighted by heavy rainfall, plunged yesterday, killing seven men. The rescue workers toiled today to find five bodies, two having been recovered yesterday.

Working in fifteen-minute shifts, supported by a crew removing debris and bringing up tools and refreshments, 100 miners dug furiously today for the bodies of five of seven of their companions whose lives were snuffed out yesterday afternoon by an enormous irruption of mud and water-filled gravel into the Carbonado mine of the Pacific Coast Coal Company.
