Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls also win events at Burnett first-aid meet; new field telephone is tested
Newcastle mine workers carried off the honors in the annual mine rescue and first aid meet of the Pacific Coast Coal Company, staged at Burnett yesterday.
The Newcastle Boy Scouts and Newcastle Camp Fire Girls also won first places in the first aid contests. Approximately 1,200 persons, most of them mine workers and members of their families of Burnett and other coal camps, witnessed the contests.
The Newcastle combination first aid and mine rescue team made the high combination record, scoring 96.3, with the Burnett combination team second, score 96.2.
Winning the combination event entitles the Newcastle team to represent the Pacific Coast Coal Company in any other meet that may be held this year.
Newcastle team wins
The Newcastle mine workers team, captained by B.F. Snook, won first place in the mine recue event with a score of 97. Burnett, captained by Homer Blair, second, 96.6; Black Diamond, captained by A.G. Wallace, third, 93.4. The Carbonado and Wilkeson teams “also ran.”
In the first aid event for women Black Diamond was first, score 96; Burnett second, 95.8.
In the first aid event for women the Burnett team was first, score 97.2; Newcastle second, 95.
In the Boy Scouts’ first aid contest the Newcastle boys scored .93.6. Black Diamond was second with 91.4.
In the Girl Scouts’ first aid event the Newcastle team led with 96; Carbonado was second, 89.4.
A feature of the meet was the participation for the first time of teams of school children in the first aid contests. Thirty-six teams were entered, divided into three divisions, A, B, and C, according to school grades.
In Division A, grades 7, 8, 9, and 10, the Black Diamond girls won; Burnett girls second. The Black Diamond boys won both first and second prizes.
In Division B, grades 4, 5, and 6, the Newcastle girls on won both first and second place and made the only 100 percent score of the meet. The Newcastle boys won first and the Carbonado boys second.
In Division C, grades 1, 2, and 3, the Black Diamond girls won first; Carbonado girls second; Black Diamond boys first, and Carbonado boys second.

Black Diamond won the cup for the highest average scores in the meet.
Another feature of the meet was the use of a field telephone invented by a Burnett mine worker, Homer Blair, and intended especially for mine rescue contests. Mr. Blair will leave soon for Washington, where he will seek to have it adopted for mine rescue use.
Fifteen members of the Seattle Fire Department judged the first aid contests. The Newcastle and Black Diamond bands furnished music for the meet.
