A long-felt need in Maple Valley for a local fabric store will from now on be met by JoAnn Himmelman, sole owner of Cedar River Fabrics, which had its grand opening last week in the new Wilderness Village building at 22126 S.E. 237th.

Miss Himmelman says her ambition is to carry in her store things that people want and need and things that people like and use. Her well-stocked tables and counters are loaded with, among others, bolts of polyester knits, cotton knits, denims, and prints.

“I’m not specializing in any one particular fabric,” Miss Himmelman says. “We carry a little bit of everything—bridal laces in different designs, some imported from France. We carry Metrosene thread, Wrights’ tapes, quite a selection of buttons, Butterick and Simplicity patterns, pins, trims, ribbons—quite a full line of notions—and imported ‘Fiskars’ scissors for both sewing and other household tasks.” (more…)

October was a banner month in the production department, and demonstrated that the mines and the new forces are prepared to do their part at any time the coal market returns to normal.

All previous production per man per day records were exceeded at Black Diamond, Burnett, and Newcastle, and at Burnett the total hoist for the month passed anything in the history of the mine.

These gratifying results were achieved because every man from the highest supervisor to the lowest laborer was on his toes and because everyone took an intense and a sincere interest in doing his particular part in showing what “we” can do. (more…)
